A Statement of Purpose has about ninety seconds to earn a full read. That means the first two sentences carry more weight than the rest of the page combined.

The SOPs that work are specific: a named professor, a named research gap, a named reason this university and no other. The SOPs that fail are the ones that could be submitted, unchanged, to five different universities.
