Common Application Essay Prompts: 2026-2027
Every August, the same question lands in our inbox from a dozen different families: "Which prompt should my child pick?" The honest answer is that the prompt matters far less than most students think. Admissions officers are not grading the question — they are looking for a specific, truthful story told in a distinctive voice.
Where we see Indian applicants stumble most often is prompt selection driven by what sounds impressive rather than what is true. A essay about a debate trophy, written because it "sounds like an achievement," reads nothing like an essay about a real turning point, written because it happened.
Our advice this cycle is the same as every cycle: start with the story, not the prompt. Find the moment first. The prompt will follow.
